Today, Sanoma Learning published the results of its annual European Teacher Survey capturing the voice of nearly 10 000 teachers. The survey shows a strong preference for combining printed and digital learning materials, and provides insights into the main drivers for learning outcomes in primary and secondary education across Europe.
Nearly 10,000 primary and secondary teachers participated in the survey, from 8 European countries (Finland, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Spain and Italy). The survey has been conducted annually since 2021 and provides unique insights into the main drivers and challenges for learning in European schools.
Main drivers for learning outcomes in European schools
The top three drivers of learning outcomes, according to the survey, are: 1) students' intrinsic motivation, 2) coaching and feedback from teachers, and 3) access to quality learning materials like textbooks, exercise books and related digital materials.
Teachers’ preferences for a well-functioning learning environment
The survey shows a strong preference for blended learning, with 95% of the teachers preferring to use a combination of printed and digital resources. In highly digitalised markets, teachers have a stronger appreciation for print. Over 90% of teachers agree that personalisation, where the learning content is tailored to students' needs and progression is essential for better learning outcomes.
Regional differences in access to learning materials
There are significant differences between markets when it comes to access to learning materials. Finnish Primary teachers are most satisfied with the access to learning materials. About half of the responding Secondary education teachers in Spain, and half of all responding teachers in southern Belgium (Wallonia) and Germany say they are not satisfied with how accessible learning materials are to students.
Many teachers are also dissatisfied with how the educational system works, and their satisfaction with key elements of the local educational system shows big contrasts between European markets.
Most teachers embrace analytics to compare student
Furthermore, the survey reveals that most European teachers are positive about the use of analytics to track, compare, and advise on student performance, with some exceptions in Germany, Belgium Wallonia, and Finland.
"With almost 10.000 teachers participating, this is a unique cross-European survey that can give insight and understanding of the current state of primary and secondary education. Hopefully we are able to capture and bring forth the voice of the European teachers, to help improving education. We therefore invite school leaders, decision makers, teachers and all those interested in the future of learning to explore the survey's findings and discover the trends and challenges facing teachers and students across Europe.", says Cristina Taroiu, Chief Strategy Officer at Sanoma.
